Mic Geniuz (formerly known as Mikey Leek) was born on February 8, 1989 in, Astoria, Queens, New York. Mic had the privilege of being raised in the inner city streets of NYC and on the countryside of Raleigh, North Carolina and was influenced by the culture of both these beautifully unique places. At an early age, Mic’s passion for music and artistry were evident.
Before he was able to speak, he would belt his favorite songs and started writing poetry and music by the time he was four years old. Throughout his childhood, he adamantly participated in community programs, school talent shows, the school choir, theater products, and even modeling.
During Mic’s teenage years, his family operated a record company and recording studio.
Under his mother’s wing, Mic developed an unrelenting desire for the behind-the-scenes aspect of the entertainment industry, while grooming his creativity. In 2010, Mic’s mother passed away due to congestive heart failure. Although the loss of his mother was difficult to overcome, he continued to manage her entertainment blog entitled, NCShowoff.com, as well as remaining to be an integral part in his brother’s—Drique London—career and brand.
In 2011, Mic teamed up with Tomita Anae and a group of other young innovators to create Pump It Up Media. Through this outlet, the team would create music videos, documentaries, short stories, and local concerts. Mic would also establish himself as a creative/visual director and artist & repertoire for many local and independent artist. It was at this moment that he realized that he possessed a deeper interest in being on air, interviewing and developing others.
Mic attended Liberty University and studied Communications in Digital Media. There, he interned at the school’s radio station. During this time, Mic started his own online podcast entitled, The Mikey Leek Show, in 2012. On his show, some of his guests were Love and Hip Hop’s Tiffany Foxx, the gospel group 21:03, gospel artist Angel Taylor from Trin-i-tee 5:7, Pamela Long from Rnb group Total and a host of others. In 2013, The Mikey Leek Show was picked up by the Stellar Award-winning online radio station, Power 104ATL in 2013.
February 8, 2015, Mic’s birthday, he released a spoken word and poetry album, Leek’d Ink Vol.1, that is available for free stream and download. This album features thirteen poems that are very personal to Mic that he has written throughout the years. Mic is currently working on another music project which would include not only his poetry but he will be showcasing his singing and rap talents. Mic created his name from the idea that “Mic” is an abbreviated form of his first name, Michael, and that it is short for microphone; Geniuz, spelled with a “z” instead of an “s” was a childhood nickname. Mic has since launched his radio show, The Mic Geniuz Show is available as a weekly podcast via website, soundcloud and iTunes. Mic Geniuz has continued doing media training , providing artist relations, assisting, hosting and producing numerous media programs and events along the east coast and looking to expand his brand.
